She is receiving the award for her commitment to freedom of expression, human rights and democracy in Belarus.

Hanna Liubakova is a journalist, political analyst and human rights defender from Belarus. She specialises in the media, human rights and the political landscape in Belarus and the wider region, and is regarded as a key voice of the free press in Belarus.

Her work plays a vital role in international reporting on authoritarianism, oppression and democratic resistance in her homeland. Even from exile, Liubakova continues to report on events in Belarus.

In doing so, she gives a voice to political prisoners, persecuted journalists and civil society, which is coming under increasing pressure. Through her journalistic work, Liubakova champions freedom of expression and supports those who stand up for democracy.

Since 2009, Ghent University has awarded the Amnesty International Chair annually to an individual who makes an exceptional contribution to human rights worldwide.
