This talk distinguishes and discusses three facets of control.

Control is a notoriously multi-faceted concept. We will consider three particular aspects distributed across time: before, during and after the exertion of control.

  1. Ccontrollability: the quantification of the potential for appropriate influence in an environment prior to initiating an action.
  2. Multiple layers of meta-control over action and computation that are involved during the calculation and execution of actions.
  3. Local and global meta-cognition: the assessment and attribution of the outcomes of attempts at control between different, partly-competing, causes.
