Kitchen Rules

We count on you to keep the common kitchen clean, out of respect for your fellow residents and the cleaning staff.

Dishes

Clean your dishes after cooking and do not leave it behind in the kitchen. Dirty dishes will be collected in a container by the cleaning staff. Every TUESDAY the container is emptied out and the content will be removed permanently. Keep this in mind and clean up in time. As long as the container is in the kitchen, you can take out your dishes back. Clean it and store it away.

Fridges

Keep the shared fridges clean and take out expired food. Label your food with your name and date to avoid confusion and/or waste.

If not provided by the university (only in studios, flats and rooms plus), one fridge is allowed with the maximum size 'table model' in the room. Energy label F is the minimum requirement. You can buy one through university at www.ugent.be/huisvesting/koelkast

The fridges and freezers in the common kitchens are cleaned throughout the year. This is announced with a sticker on the fridge. The fridge or freezer will need to be empty for one day.

Kitchen cabinet

Every resident (except for studios, flats and rooms plus) has a cabinet in the common kitchen. The number of the cabinet matches with your room number. To lock the cabinet you should provide your own padlock. If you use a cabinet that is not yours, the padlock and content will be removed.

If there is no padlock, the home manager can decide to empty it out and remove the content.

Extractor hood

Make sure that during cooking you always turn on the extractor hood. This way you avoid unnecessary fire alerts.

Food scraps

To avoid clogged drains, it is important to not flush food scraps or oil down the drains. Food scraps belong in the provided trash bins. In case of repeated problems, the cleaning of the kitchen and/or access to the kitchen can be paused temporarily.

Recycling

To deal with waste as sustainably as possible, we offer various recycling options. You can go to the kitchens with your residual waste, plastics, paper, glass & organic waste. In the entrance hall/common room of each home, you can deposit your empty batteries in a Bebat container. For more specific questions about which waste should go in which bag, you can fall back on this folder from Ivago.

Between home Groningen and home Uppsala (site Kantienberg), we also offer the possibility to leave your unused clothes in the textile container.

Unknown appliance

Do you have a personal appliance in the communal kitchen? This appliance must be approved by the home manager. This is important to reduce the risk of fire hazards and keep the kitchen clean.

At the start of each semester (and at the beginning of the summer), an orange sticker is placed on every non-UGent appliance. The appliance is unknown to the home manager, and someone must take responsibility for it. Complete this form before the date shown on the sticker to give notice of your device. If a device is not claimed, it will be taken away by the home administrator.

After the home administrator is informed of the owner of the device, two situations can occur:

  • Green sticker on your appliance: the appliance is approved by the home administrator and may remain in the communal kitchen until the date mentioned on the sticker. If you do not maintain your appliance, you may still receive a red sticker.
  • Red sticker on your appliance: the appliance is a fire hazard or unhygienic. Clean or remove the device before the date indicated on the sticker. If the device is not clean when the home manager does their inspection, they will take it away.

We thank you for your cooperation!
