Ghent University students help build circular pavilions at Tech Lane Ghent

Currently, the Campus Zone of Tech Lane Ghent Science Park is in full development. Various R&D facilities of major national and international companies are being realised there. To give their (future) employees space to relax and meet each other, a landscape park is being created in the middle of the Campus Zone. The eye-catchers of the park are two pavilions on a central green square.

Circular meeting places

To design these pavilions, Tech Lane Ghent (TLG), developer of the Campus Zone, approached the 1st Master students of Studio A and Architectural Design Studio: Design Development of Ghent University. The students were tasked with drawing out a circular project as a team. TLG guided them through the process together with the lecturers. In the end, the design by Luna De Zitter, Kobe Gielen, Ruben Van den Bossche and Yannis Bessila was chosen. "We could only design with circular or second-hand materials, within a certain budget," Ruben explains. "That challenges you as a designer to make existing elements into a striking whole. That's how we came up with the idea of working with used greenhouse structures."

Over the past few months, the pavilions have been erected and, in the meantime, they are completely finished. "It's impressive to see the final result," beams Luna. "Working with circular materials certainly brings challenges, but our project shows that it is possible." High ambitions in terms of sustainability are set for the entire business park, and these circular pavilions add to that. "The realisation that we as designers can really mean something to society has fully penetrated thanks to this project," Kobe adds.

About the development of the Campus Zone

The Campus Zone on Eiland Zwijnaarde, a green, sustainable and regional business park in the south of Ghent, is being developed by TLG, a collaboration between city development company sogent, the Flemish Investment Company PMV and Ghent University. The science park is located on the southern part of the business park. Besides the R&D facilities and the landscape park developed by TLG, NV Eiland Zwijnaarde is also building two parking buildings there and NV Tech Lane Park building a facility park building that will play an important role in building the community on the business park.
