Ghent University launches an Olympic Studies Centre
(12-10-2023) The recently created Jacques Rogge Olympic Studies Centre (JOSC) has been recognised by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Olympic Studies Centre as an official research centre actively engaged in Olympic studies.
This new centre is intended to become a central hub for research, education and service on the Olympic values: excellence, friendship and respect. By bringing together Ghent University researchers from different fields of science, the JOSC aims to promote the development and dissemination of the Olympic values in both theory and practice. In addition, the JOSC also wants to explore new research collaborations, both internally and externally.
"Many of our current initiatives, such as the courses 'Belgian Olympic Academy' and 'Becoming an Olympian in Sports Analytics,' are now scattered. By bringing those initiatives together and coordinating them in the JOSC, we hope to reach more people," says centre director Bram Constandt.
After centres in Louvain-la-Neuve and Brussels, the JOSC is the third Olympic Studies and Research Centre in Belgium to be recognized by the IOC. The Ghent centre will also focus on studying Belgian Olympic history in general and the legacy of former IOC president Jacques Rogge (1942-2021) in particular.
