Scale seniority for the AAP

The salary scale seniority of the assistant academic staff is calculated taking into account the acquired academic seniority and the following provisions:

Academic seniority is understood to mean the following:

  1. the duration of a fellowship as referred to in Article V.30 of the Codex of Higher Education insofar as it concerns an employment contract of at least 50%. The years spent as a doctoral fellow are included in the calculation of the seniority related to the fellowship;
  2. the duration of an employment contract of at least 50% at a university in the Flemish Community, regardless of the funding source, on the understanding that the assignment includes academic activities (including activities referred to in Article V.7 of the Codex of Higher Education). The years spent as a doctoral fellow are included in this;
  3. the duration of an employment contract of at least 50% at a university other than those referred to in b) or at a national or international academic institution, on the understanding that the assignment includes academic activities and provided that the university board recognizes these activities as such. The years spent as a doctoral fellow are included in this;
  4. the duration of academic activities voluntarily undertaken at a university in the Flemish Community insofar as these activities cover at least 50% of a regular full-time assignment and insofar as the university board has explicitly authorized the performance of these activities;
  5. the duration of relevant academic activities demonstrably performed at a university college in the Flemish Community, insofar as these activities cover at least 50% of a regular full-time assignment;
  6. the duration of relevant (academic) activities demonstrably performed at a national or international company or knowledge centre insofar as these activities cover at least 50% of a regular full-time assignment;
  7. the duration of the employment as a member of the research staff at Ghent University counting from the start of the appointment, regardless of whether the employment is fulltime or part-time;
  8. half of the duration of the employment referred to in a), b), c), d), e) and f) if the employment amounts to less than 50% of a regular full-time assignment;
  9. teaching assignments in higher or secondary education insofar as they cover at least half a timetable are taken into account to determine the salary scale seniority. If the teaching assignments cover less than half a timetable, half of the employment period will be taken into account to determine the salary scale seniority.

The duration of the appointment is calculated per calendar month: incomplete months are not included. The total salary scale seniority can never exceed the nominal duration of the eligible periods. Pecuniary seniority is expressed in years and full calendar months, which always start on the first of a month. If the start date is not the first of a month, the seniority is calculated from the first of the month following the recruitment date.
