This presentation by Dr. Keith Cooper will demonstrate how OneBenthic exemplifies the use of harmonised data and modern analytical techniques to strengthen the scientific foundation for marine monitoring, ecosystem assessment and sustainable seabed management.
The OneBenthic initiative facilitates a data science approach to understanding and managing seabed ecosystems by integrating and standardising benthic biological and sediment data from diverse national and international sources.
Through advanced data processing and spatial modelling, OneBenthic enables the exploration of patterns in benthic biodiversity, habitat composition and ecological condition at multiple spatial scales.
These analyses support the production of consistent, high-resolution maps that inform assessments of environmental status, biodiversity hotspots and potential risks from human activities such as aggregate extraction and offshore development.
Dr Keith Cooper is a senior marine ecologist and data‐scientist at Centre for Environment, Fisheries & Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), where he leads the marine aggregate industry’s Regional Seabed Monitoring Programme and the OneBenthic initiative.
