Access tag for homes

To gain access to areas of the campus that are not open to the public and – in certain cases – to the building where you work or are doing an internship, every member of the Ghent University community needs a personal access badge (tag).

Each electronic key (tag) is strictly personal. It is forbidden to lend it to others or grant access to strangers.

Blue tag (access UGent home - Housing Office)

As a (new) resident, you will automatically receive a tag when you check in. This (personal) tag grants you access to your own accommodation.

If you regularly need help from someone who does not live in the home (e.g. a home nurse), you can request a tag for your ‘assistant’ by sending an email to accommodatie@ugent.be

Reactivating your tag (home Uppsala)

Starting in May 2026, all the locks of the doors to the rooms at home Uppsala will be replaced by electronic locks.

  • Please keep your current key and return it along with you tag when you check-out. Even after the lock on your door has changed
  • Activate your tag at the entry door (not the gate!) of home Uppsala. Hold it against the tag reader for 3 seconds (until it turns green).
    • Always enter the building with your tag, otherwise the tag will not work at your room.
    • Repeat this at least twice a week to keep your tag active.
    • If your tag does not work at your door, return to the entrance door and reactivate your tag.

Opening your room with your tag (only home Uppsala)

  • Hold your tag against the lock, the light will turn green
  • Turn the black lock to open the door. If the light turns red before opening, tag again.
  • Close your door everytime you leave. Hold the tag against the lock and turn it to lock.

Can't access your room with your tag? (only home Uppsala)

  • If the lock turns red and afterwards green the battery is running low. Report this at homeserve.ugent.be asap so you don't lose access to the home.
  • If the lock turns red and gives an alert signal, there was an error.  Reactivate the tag at the enterance and try again.
  • If the lock blinks a red light three times and beeps, you don't have access rights. You are either at the wrong building or you need to reactivate the tag at the enterance.
  • Other problems? Please visit the reception desk during opening hours.
  • Did your lock break due to negligence? The repair cost will be charged

Lost your tag?

  • You can obtain a new tag to replace the old one. Visit the reception at Home Vermeylen during opening hours. You will be billed for the new tag, but only if the old tag has not been accounted for (found or returned) after 14 days.
  • Tag stolen? You will only be exempt from payment if you can provide a police report regarding the theft. If you are unable to provide a police report, you will be invoiced if the old tag is not returned within 14 days (whether found or returned by you).

Tag doesn't work (anymore)?

Please collect a new tag from reception at Home Vermeylen during opening hours. This tag will replace the old one (free of charge).

Black tag (access UGent campus)

You can request this via your faculty or the university administration, or via the project manager. That person will submit the request on your behalf. You will be notified personally once the request has been processed. These tags do not grant you access to the home.
