Advance on the study grant of the Flemish government

Students who are eligible for a study allowance from the Flemish Government can apply for an advance payment.

Submitting an Application

  • After your definitive (re)registration as a UGent student.

  • After you have applied for the Flemish Government study allowance.
Start your application by creating a profile in the Studietoelagen digital portal.

  • Submit your application via the Social Services student portal.

  • Please allow approximately one month for your application to be processed.

Determining the Advance

  • Based on a full calculation for the current academic year

You would like an advance based on a complete assessment of your entitlement to the study allowance for the current academic year.
We make a calculation based on the information you provide.
A full review is carried out to estimate your entitlement as accurately as possible.

  • Based on your entitlement in the previous academic year

You already qualified for the study allowance last year, and there have been no changes in your situation or registration.
This procedure is faster and requires less information from you.
We do not perform a new calculation — therefore, your entitlement may differ for the current academic year.

  • We generally grant half of the expected study allowance amount, with a maximum of €1,500, unless otherwise agreed.

Repayment of the Advance

  • If you receive a study allowance, the Flemish Government will reimburse the advance directly to our service.
You will receive the remaining balance of the allowance yourself.

  • If you are not entitled to a study allowance, or if the allowance is lower than the advance paid?
We will recover the full or partial amount directly from you.
