Use of fumehoods

Guidelines

A fumehood is very energy consuming. Every hour (for 1 pull cabinet), an estimated 900 m³ of heated air per running metre of pull cabinet is extracted from the laboratory and discharged outside. In the newest buildings there is a heat exchanger between these, in older buildings there is not.

Therefore, respect the following guidelines:

  • Do not use the pull cabinet as a storage area for hazardous substances or waste. There are safety cabinets or storage areas for these.
  • Limit the simultaneous use of pull boxes as much as possible.
  • Limit the use of pull boxes at very low or very high outside temperatures. If you draw cold air, you will have to heat it up and vice versa. This requires a lot of energy and also creates comfort problems in older buildings.
  • Draught box with a constant flow rate.
  • Closing the sliding window has no effect. Therefore, switch off the draft cabinet (if possible via the on/off button) completely after use.
  • Pull box with variable flow rate.
  • Closing the sash does have an effect. Keep sliding window closed as much as possible.
  • Switch pull-box off completely (if possible via the on/off button) after use.
  • Use the maximum setting only if really necessary.
