Step 2: Check admission requirements

To study at Ghent University, you need to fulfil both diploma and language requirements. For access to some specific bachelor programmes, you also need to pass an entrance exam or you need to take a test.

Diploma requirements for bachelor programmes

Do you hold a foreign diploma of secondary education that gives access to a university in your country?

  • You can be admitted to a bachelor programme. Ghent University will check your documents and will decide upon admission. You can start the admission procedure (for international students).

Do you hold an official certificate issued by NARIC-Vlaanderen stating that your foreign diploma of secondary education is equivalent to a Flemish diploma of secondary education?

  • You can register directly for a bachelor programme. You do not need to start up an admission procedure. However, you still need to fulfil the language requirements.

You successfully completed secondary education in your country but due to circumstances as a refugee you cannot provide documents?

Diploma requirements for master programmes

For access to a master programme, you need at least a (foreign) bachelor degree. Furthermore access to a master programme depends on your prior education. The Ghent University study guide provides more detailed information on specific admission requirements for master programmes.

Do you hold a foreign degree that corresponds with a bachelor degree that gives access to the master programme of your choice?

  • Ghent University will assess your documents and will decide upon admission. You can start up the admission procedure (for international students). In some cases you will be required to first take part in a preparatory or linking course.

Do you hold an official equivalence issued by NARIC-Vlaanderen stating that your foreign degree is equivalent to a Flemish bachelor degree that gives access to the master course of your choice?

  • You have direct access to the master programme. You do not need to start up the admission procedure (for international students). However, you still need to meet the language requirements.

Language requirements

Besides the diploma requirements, you need to fulfil language requirements as well. It is not possible to start a course programme without meeting the language requirements.

What are the language requirements?

In general, for programmes instructed in Dutch a proficiency of Dutch level B2 is required. For most programmes taught in English, you need to proof you have a proficiency in English level B2. However, for some programmes language requirements might be more specific or different from the standard requirements. Check language requirements and accepted language certificates carefully.

Where can you take a language course or a language test?

The University Language Centre (UCT) is offering language courses and language test.

When do you need to fulfil the language requirements?

You need to provide your language certificate at the latest upon enrolment. You do not need to already meet the language requirements when starting up the admission procedure.

Entrance exams and tests

For access to some specific bachelor programmes, you need to pass an entrance exam or you need to take a test.

Entrance exam Medicine and Dentistry

For access to the bachelor of Medicine of Dentistry, you need to pass and be ranked for an entrance exam (information in Dutch).

Bench marking test (Ijkingstoetsen)

Before enrolment in some bachelor programmes (Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Architecture, Industrial Sciences, Veterinary Science) participating in a bench marking test (ijkingstoets) is obligatory.
