(28-05-2026) Ghent ranks among the world’s leading technology cities. In Dealroom’s Global Tech Ecosystem Index, the city is ranked 10th globally and 4th in Europe.

This international recognition confirms the strength of Ghent’s ecosystem: innovation is given the opportunity to flourish and is bolstered by numerous collaborations. Ghent University plays a crucial role in this story.

According to the ranking, which was published today, Ghent stands out for the high value of its technology companies, the number of unicorns, the capital raised and its strong links with the university and its alumni. The city thus ranks among international technology hubs: in Europe, only Cambridge, London and Stockholm outperform Ghent, and in the same international ranking, Ghent ranks above Salt Lake City (13), San Diego (17) and Münich (19).

For Ghent University, this recognition is no coincidence. The university is a breeding ground and driving force for talent, knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship. The strong scientific research, the entrepreneurship programmes for students and researchers, the support in setting up spin-offs and the collaborations with numerous alumni and companies play a key role in this. All of this creates a significant impact.

Rector Petra De Sutter: ‘Together with our researchers, students, entrepreneurs, businesses, investors and policymakers, we are turning knowledge into progress: from biotech and healthtech to AI and sustainability. At Ghent University, we are extremely proud to be playing a crucial role in the international recognition that Ghent is receiving today as a city of technology.’
