From quantum chips to quantum computers: King Philippe visits Ghent University
(22-10-2026) On Tuesday 20 October, King Philippe visited iGent, Ghent University's research building on Campus Ardoyen.
During his visit, the King discovered how Ghent University researchers and companies are working together to develop innovative technologies, with a particular focus on quantum technology.
Upon arrival, King Philippe was welcomed by Ghent University Rector Petra De Sutter and Filip De Turck, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Architecture. Vice-Dean Patrick De Baets, Tom Roelants (President of the AIG Alumni Association) and Koen Kerckaert (Chair of the Faculty Senate) were also on hand to greet the King at the entrance to iGent. Carina Van Cauter, Governor of East Flanders, and Mathias De Clercq, Mayor of Ghent, were also present.
During a roundtable discussion, Ghent University researchers Karel Van Acoleyen, Frank Verstraete, Veronique Van Speybroeck, Sigrid Sterckx, Kasper Van Gasse, Bart Kuyken and Xin Yin introduced the King to the world of quantum technology. They presented their research and discussed the opportunities, challenges and ethical questions associated with these emerging technologies.
The King was then given a behind-the-scenes tour of the quantum communication and quantum computing laboratories, where he had the opportunity to see a quantum computer up close.
Through its research into quantum chips, photonics and quantum communication, among other fields, Ghent University plays a key role in advancing these promising technologies in Belgium.
