Pause, connect and reflect with ‘We Are the Whale’
(13-04-2026) From 23 April to 25 May, the remarkable project ‘We Are the Whale’ arrives in Ghent.
What if you suddenly found yourself face to face with a life-sized whale in the middle of the city? Ghent University, together with the City of Ghent, HOGent and Artevelde University of Applied Sciences, is taking part in the artistic initiative We Are the Whale — a project that fosters connection, reflection and dialogue about the vulnerability of both humans and nature.
The whale, an impressive artwork that “washes ashore” at different locations across the city, forms the beating heart of a series of activities. You can first visit it at the Bijloke site (23 April to 8 May), after which it moves to Coyendanspark (9 May to 25 May). But this whale is more than something to look at: it is a place to pause, to feel and to connect with others.
Pause together, move forward together
With this project, we warmly invite students to slow down during what is often a busy period. At the same time, we create space for conversations that don’t always come easily: about vulnerability, mental wellbeing, connection and our relationship with nature. You don’t have to go through it alone — and here, you can feel that.
That’s why we are organising a series of free activities, centred around connection, creativity and relaxation.
