Scholarship payment

Your monthly scholarship payment is composed of several elements and is shown on your payslip. Below you will find an overview of how your payment is calculated and how to read your payslip.

How your gross fellowship is determined

Your gross fellowship amount is based on the following factors:

  • Your address information (for administrative purposes)
  • The applicable salary scale
  • Your seniority (recognized previous work experience)
  • Your employment percentage (usually 100%)
  • The number of days worked, as well as any vacation or sick leave

Your payslip also mentions the contract number, salary scale, grade (number of years within the salary scale), and your annual salary (with and without indexation).

Performance and gross pay section

The first main table on your payslip is divided into two parts:

  1. Time-related data
Shows the number of days worked and any absences.
  2. Composition of the gross pay
Lists the different components that make up your gross amount — such as your monthly salary, possible household or location allowances, and benefits in kind.

Each line in the table displays:

  • Code + description of the component
  • Quantity (e.g. number of worked hours)
  • Rate (e.g. hourly rate or fixed amount)
  • Amount (calculated total for that component)

If you have multiple contracts, there will be a separate table for each contract number.

Deductions and totals

The second table shows how your net amount (the amount you actually receive) is calculated from the gross amount.

Above this table, you’ll see your marital status and the number of dependent children, as these factors are relevant for taxation (for employees) — but note that for scholarship holders, no withholding tax is deducted.

The deductions listed usually include:

  • Social security contributions (either full: 13.07% or partial: 4.6%)
  • Possible other statutory deductions

Because your fellowship is exempt from personal income tax, there is no tax withholding.

A connectivity fee may be added to your payment (for employment percentages of 20% or higher).

Adjustments to previous months

If a correction is made to a previous month (for example, adding a bicycle allowance or adjusting a benefit), the modified data for that month will be listed separately on your payslip.
The wage component /552 of the current month shows the total net amounts carried over from previous corrections.

Your net amount

After all deductions, the remaining amount shown on your payslip is your net fellowship — this is the amount you actually receive on your bank account.

Payment details

  • Payments are made monthly, usually around the fourth last working day of the month.
  • The amount is transferred to your personal Belgian or European bank account.
