Study or research in Italy: Collegio dei Fiamminghi

Every year the Collegio dei Fiamminghi offers two scholarships for study or research in Bologna. The scholarship amounts to 7000 euro and includes accommodation for 8 months study or research (1 academic year) at the University of Bologna or another research institute in Bologna (IT).

Target group: graduating students and holders of a MA degree or PhD degree.
The call is open for all disciplines and all nationalities.

Eligibility criteria

  • You are obtaining a master or PhD degree at Ghent university this year, or you have already obtained it, with good study results.
  • You have a well-motivated, detailed proposal for a study or research plan that you want to realize in Bologna.
  • You have a good command of the Italian Language.
  • The scholarship of the Collegio is not compatible with any other scholarship or grant. You haven’t received this scholarship in the past.

Application procedure

Your application should comprise the following documents

  • A proof of a good command of the Italian language.
  • A motivation letter.
  • An elaborated proposal for study or research (or a combination of both).
  • Transcript of records; excellent study results are required.
  • Curriculum vitae.
  • 2 reference letters and other relevant documents. Candidates who want to do research should add an invitation letter (from the supervisor) from the University of Bologna.

Time table

Candidates must send their application file (including the aforementioned documents) addressed to Mr. Frederik De Decker, Manager of the Function Domain Internationalisation, via BuitenlandNaStudies@UGent.be. The deadline for submitting the application is April 22, 2026.

Each Flemish university may put forward two candidates for the inter-university final selection within the VLIR. The Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR) selects two final scholarship winners from the Flemish candidates.

In the past Ghent University candidates have often been awarded a scholarship. The candidates are informed about a potential scholarship around mid-July.

We recommend that you inquire about the precise application procedure and deadlines of the University of Bologna or other institutions in the region where you plan to study or conduct research. It's wise to do this in the months leading up to submitting your scholarship application.
