Assistant

A master’s degree is required for an appointment as assistant.
Anyone who obtained their master’s or doctoral degree outside the EU must request diploma equivalence recognition from the competent Flemish authority.

The appointment may be renewed up to two times, each time subject to a positive evaluation of the previous period. One term generally lasts two years.

Any period during which the candidate previously received a doctoral scholarship and/or was already appointed as assistant at a university within the Flemish Community is deducted from the maximum appointment duration.

Assistant mandates are, in principle, full-time. In exceptional cases, a part-time appointment (minimum 50%) is possible:

  • In combination with an additional part-time position as a scientific staff member, resulting in a full-time position at Ghent University; or
  • When the assistant performs supportive activities for scientific research based on professional practice and experience.

Before the start of the second year of the mandate, a doctoral research topic is determined in consultation with the assistant and the supervisor(s), and submitted for approval to the Faculty Board.

Assistants devote at least 50% of their assignment to research in preparation for a doctoral dissertation.
