Post doctoral researchers in international mobility

UGent may award scholarships to deserving individuals (both EEA and non-EEA nationality) to further study at UGent. The sole purpose of this scholarship is to allow a candidate to devote himself/herself to scientific study or research. The researcher may not perform any services for the benefit of UGent within this agreement.

The grant can only be awarded within the framework of international scientific mobility. This is the case if:

  • the researcher stayed abroad for at least 24 months of the 3 years preceding the start date of the postdoctoral fellowship and did not work or study in Belgium during this period. However, during these 24 months, short-term stays in Belgium are allowed such as holidays, participation in conferences or a short stay to prepare for the stay as a postdoctoral researcher
  • the researcher is funded by the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action (MSCA) and thus fulfils the associated mobility conditions.

How will my salary be determined?

Your salary will be determined based on the following elements:

  • The level of the job (job class) and the associated salary scales
  • Your seniority

Level of function

There are job classes applicable.

Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD)

Range Required diploma General job title Salary scales
AAP5 Diploma of doctor on dissertation (PhD) Doctor-Assistant AAP5

Seniority

In addition to job level, seniority also plays a role in determining your salary.

By monetary seniority we mean all the work experience (= acquired scientific seniority) you have accumulated in your career inside and outside UGent.

Seniority you have accumulated outside UGent, for example in the private or public sector, can be included in the calculation of your salary under certain conditions. When you start at UGent, we ask you to submit employment certificates from previous employers. This allows us to accurately calculate your total number of years of work experience. The university administration decides which work experience (other than academic seniority) can count towards your salary.

The duration of employment is calculated by calendar month: incomplete months are not counted. The total amount of enlistment seniority can never exceed the nominal duration of eligible periods. Monetary seniority is expressed in years and full calendar months. These always commence on the first of a month. If the starting date is not the first of a month, seniority is calculated from the first of the month following the date of recruitment.

Once you are employed at UGent, your monetary seniority increases annually or biennially.

How do I interpret the salary scales?

In the job posting, you will always find the job class and the associated salary scales. You can then consult the gross, non-indexed annual salary in the above salary scales.

  • The columns are the various salary scales.
  • The rows represent the number of years of monetary seniority (the steps).
  • To know the indexed gross annual salary, multiply the amount by the current index. To know the gross monthly salary divide that amount by 12 months.
  • - A scholarship that meets the conditions and criteria of the regulations for postdoctoral fellows is considered free of personal income tax but is subject to social security. UGent is considered an 'employer' for social security obligations.
  • As regards the size of the contributions, a distinction is made between:
    • grantees who fall within the scope of Regulation (EC) No.883/2004 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2004 (formerly 1408/71 of the Council of 14 June 1971) on the coordination of the 4/9 social security systems, or any other bi- or multilateral treaty on social security concluded by the Kingdom of Belgium: they are fully subject to social security;
    • grantees not covered by the above-mentioned Regulation (EC) No 883/2004 or bilateral social security treaties: they are subject to full social security with the exception of the pension and unemployment sectors
  • The net amount depends on your personal situation. If you would like a calculation of the net, you can find gross-net simulators through an online search engine that will give you an indication of the netto amount you can expect.
  • The fellowship amount will not be revised in the current year except in case of indexation. If the family situation changes during employment, a scholarship amount adjustment will be made on January 1 following the family situation change.

Disclaimer: It is always the University administration that has the final say on the salary scale assigned. The information on this page only provides a tool for applicants to estimate salary and is in no way binding. The step is determined after submission of employment certificates.
