Teaching assistant
A master’s degree is also required for an appointment as a Teaching assistant.
Anyone who obtained their master’s or doctoral degree outside the EU must request diploma equivalence recognition through the competent Flemish authority.
Duties
Teaching assistants are exclusively assigned practice-oriented teaching tasks, including any coordinating responsibilities within that assignment. They are expected to draw on their professional, practical, or field experience to contribute a specific, well-defined, and/or up-to-date component to practice-based education.
Teaching assistants:
- cannot act as responsible lecturer or co-lecturer of a course unit.
- are not authorized to give lectures.
- do not supervise master’s theses, except when a clear practical component adds value.
- do not take on research duties.
Employment percentage
- Maximum 30% FTE
This is a cumulative limit: one person can be appointed as teaching assistant for no more than 30% FTE across Ghent University.
It concerns a temporary appointment that can be renewed indefinitely, each time for a maximum of five years. - More than 30% FTE
An appointment above 30% FTE is exceptional and only possible within the framework of an (innovative) educational project, whose importance and necessity must be justified.
This is a one-time, non-renewable appointment of at least one and at most three years. - Exception up to 60% FTE
Exceptionally, the appointment percentage may be increased temporarily to a maximum of 60% FTE (maximum one year) to address unexpected staffing gaps within the department.
Explicit agreement of the teaching assistant is required.
