Writer Emine Sadka and journalist Mihail Mishev will join historian Dr Albena Shkodrova and Dr Miglena Dikova-Milanova (Ghent University) for a discussion on the growing fragility - and possible exhaustion - of Bulgaria’s long‑standing ethnic model.

They will look at how this model has limited minority representation and shaped the public conversation for decades. The discussion will also turn to recent developments within Bulgaria’s racialised communities. How do people negotiate language, identity, and citizenship in a climate marked by democratic fatigue, but also by new forms of civic engagement?

The speakers will reflect, too, on how rising intra‑European migration is changing everyday life for these communities and influencing their visibility in the public sphere.
