Prof Ferner is a world-renowned specialist in neurofibromatosis 1 associated malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumour (MPNST), a rare sarcoma subtype.

MPNST is a rare but aggressive sarcoma type, for which no targeted treatments are currently available. Systemic treatment only provides modest survival benefits, leading to an overall 5-year survival of only 40-50%.

Preclinical modelling of the cancer has led to several clinical trials investigating targeted treatments, but none have shown significant effects on patient survival. Preclinical research on targeted treatments and early biomarkers for malignant transformation has the potential to dramatically improve the overall survival and general wellbeing of NF1 and MPNST patients.

Therefore, in this symposium, prof Ferner will explain all about the translation from preclinical to clinical research for NF1 and MPNST, giving the PhD researchers tools to improve the clinical relevance of their research.
